This blog is dedicated to answer the question- How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real-life text?

How would it be distributed as a real-life text?

Our product keeps viewers emotionally intrigued in the storyline and plot of the film by using and adding suspense, shock, and symbolic motifs such as the Kinfe and ring, which symbolises danger and is a distinction. The audience is instantly disturbed by the sudden stabbing in the kitchen scene, and it is made the more unsettling by the fact that the violence is implicated rather than explicitly displayed, allowing them to visualize the cruelty. Dramatic irony is used to create a connection between the earlier violence and the developing mystery which is still yet to be solved to make sure that there will still be a tone of suprise, and this is further supported by the news story that later reveals 26 people are missing. The body and abandoned kitchen at the conclusion are an unexpected turn of events that gives viewers an ongoing feeling of fear.

Additionally, the ring and knife motifs increases audience participation. Every time the knife is displayed, it becomes a recurrent symbol of danger and authority, signifying the murderer's deadly strength which keeps the tone of disappear throughout the film. When the killer wears the ring on his hand, it serves as a visible marker that links him to the crimes and acts as his signature. Even in situations where the violence is suggested rather than explicit, the audience is always reminded of his identity and continuous presence whenever they see the ring. These themes increase viewers engagement with the story by encouraging them to focus on the details and decipher meaning throughout the narrative.

Online platforms and film festivals would be the most effective distribution channels for our film if it were released as a real life text because I feel it would reach the widest audience span possible and ensure the most amount of revenue made. It would be available to a large audience through online streaming services like YouTube or other popular services like Disney + or Netflix, and brief snippets and behind the scenes might be shared on social media to keep the audience entertained before the release sites like Instagram and TikTok to create tension and interest in the knife and ring themes. Given their emphasis on experimental and symbolic storytelling, film festivals that screen independent or student horror films might also be a good choice. Our movie might be made available on streaming sites as a part of a short horror, drawing in viewers who actively seek out suspenseful and symbolically charged thrillers.

Start of term 2

Planning Process

Our group (which consisted of Evie, Madi and Sean) started by developing the concept and deciding on the key locations that would bring our story to life, such as the commercial style kitchen at school and my house for the chef’s home scene. We planned each scene so the storyline flowed clearly, discussing the tone, props, and mise-en-scène needed to match our chosen genre. I was responsible for planning and organising the costumes, ensuring every chef’s outfit looked realistic and consistent, which helped maintain continuity and reinforced the professional kitchen setting throughout the film.

Our group began by developing the concept and deciding on key locations, such as the commercial style kitchen at school (which we ended up just using the dance studio kitchen) and my house for the chef’s home scene. We planned each scene so the storyline flowed clearly which took quite alot of work, through discussing the tone, props, and mise-en-scène needed to match our chosen genre. I was responsible for organising the costumes, making sure each chef’s outfit looked realistic and consistent to maintain continuity. The filming process began with the news reporter scene, which took around 50 minutes to shoot on the school field during lunch, and with the background noise of the children we found that it worked well and also made the disappearances seem more realistic . We then filmed the kitchen scene at school, which took about an hour and a half to capture all the chopping, close-ups, and the stabbing moment. Finally, we spent around two hours filming at my house, setting up the news footage on the TV (which ended up being the hardest task of the whole filming process)  and capturing the head chef’s reaction shots.

Editing

Evie led the editing process, but she regularly asked Sean and me for our opinions. She showed us rough cuts, listened to our suggestions, and made adjustments based on our feedback so the final edit reflected all our ideas.
